A quiet hurricane season doesn’t mean a quiet risk for your fleet
Quiet forecasts don’t keep water out of an engine bay. NOAA called for a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season in 2026, and the summer delivered on it. East Texas still spent the first days of September pulling people out of flooded houses.
That gap is what fleet weather preparedness is for. The weather that damages vehicles, strands crews and wipes out a week of scheduled work doesn’t check the seasonal outlook first. It shows up in quiet years, and it shows up hundreds of miles from any coastline, where one severe thunderstorm can drop 60 mph gusts and flash flooding on a yard full of vans.
Does a quiet hurricane season mean your fleet is safe?
No. A seasonal outlook estimates how many storms will form across an entire ocean basin. It says nothing about where they go or what they do when they arrive. NOAA says so plainly, describing its outlook as a general guide to overall activity rather than a landfall forecast.
The 2026 numbers do read quiet. NOAA’s August 6 update forecast 7 to 13 named storms for the season, 2 to 6 of them hurricanes, and put the odds of a below-normal year at 75% on the back of El Niño and persistent Saharan dust.
Three tropical storms have still come ashore on the northwestern Gulf Coast. Arthur landed near Matagorda County, Texas, in June and brought record rainfall to parts of Louisiana. Bertha made landfall in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, in July. Edouard came in near the Texas-Louisiana line on September 1 with 60 mph winds, then stalled inland and dropped 10 to 21 inches of rain across eastern Texas. Hardin County took 18 to 20 inches in two days against a September monthly average of 5.51 inches. Flash flood emergencies went out and more than 30,000 homes and businesses lost power.
None of the three reached hurricane strength. For a plumbing company in Beaumont, “below-normal season” describes a week nobody could work.
What past hurricanes teach fleet owners
Camille, 1969
Winds estimated at 160 mph on the morning of August 17 were up to 190 mph by late afternoon. Camille hit the Mississippi coast that night as one of only four Category 5 hurricanes on record to strike the continental United States.
Two days later, downgraded to a tropical depression, it turned east over the Blue Ridge and dropped 1 to 2 feet of rain on Virginia, with local totals above 30 inches and much of that falling inside a three-to-five-hour window. Virginia recorded 124 deaths. The storm that killed people inland had already been written off.
Hugo, 1989
Landfall came just north of Charleston as a Category 4. Six hours later the center passed west of Charlotte, roughly 200 miles inland, still throwing hurricane-force gusts. The National Weather Service anemometer at Charlotte Douglas measured 87 mph and the FAA tower there recorded 99 mph. Around 85% of Charlotte homes and businesses lost power.

Andrew, 1992
The 1992 season looked a lot like this one. Slow summer, low counts, nothing forming. Andrew was the first named storm of the year and didn’t show up until late August, rapidly intensifying in the 36 hours before it came ashore near Homestead. It destroyed over 25,000 homes and left more than 160,000 people homeless, according to NOAA.

How severe weather hits fleet operations
Flooding does the expensive damage. The National Weather Service notes that 12 inches of moving water can carry off a small car, and 18 to 24 inches can move trucks, vans and SUVs. Water in an engine, in the wiring or in the cab turns a working service vehicle into a total loss and a long argument with an adjuster. It’s also the deadliest hazard on the list, with the CDC reporting that over half of flood-related drownings happen when a vehicle is driven into flood water.
Hail takes out windshields, body panels and roof-mounted equipment, and it needs no tropical system to do it. Road closures break the schedule, burning unbillable drive time and pushing Thursday’s jobs into a Thursday that’s already full. And customers who understand perfectly well that storms happen still remember the four-hour window nobody showed up for and nobody called about.
How to keep your fleet running in any weather
Preparation is largely a set of decisions made early. Where vehicles sit, who has authority to call a stop, how crews check in, and how customers hear from you.
Keep your people safe
Write the rule down before you need it. No crew drives through standing water, ever, for any customer. That belongs in written company policy rather than in a judgment call made at the job site with a supervisor who isn’t picking up.
Assign one person to check NWS forecasts and active warnings for every county your crews will work that day, before dispatch. Set a check-in cadence for bad-weather days and a backup contact method for when cell service drops. Print the phone list.
Harsh braking, hard cornering and speeding data show you who needs coaching before the road gets slick, and dash camera footage answers the questions that follow a wet-weather collision.
Give crews the authority to stop working. If a tech needs permission to leave a flooding job site, your policy failed.
Protect your equipment
Trailers, generators, compressors and mowers are the assets that go missing and the ones nobody can find afterward. Move them to higher ground and away from trees before conditions turn, and photograph their condition and serial numbers while the weather is still fine. That documentation is what makes a claim move quickly.
Unpowered equipment is the hardest thing to keep eyes on, which is where battery-powered GPS trackers come in. Pull high-risk work forward. If a job sits in a flood-prone area and the forecast turns on Thursday, do it Tuesday. Cluster what remains geographically so crews spend less time exposed, and keep the live map open so dispatch can reroute around closures instead of hearing about them from a driver stuck behind a barricade. Keep your customers in the loop

What to do after the storm
Account for people first. Then run a location report on every unit before anyone drives anywhere. Photograph damage before moving a vehicle or a machine, and inspect for water intrusion before starting an engine, since a hydrolocked motor is a far bigger repair than a tow. Rebuild the week around what’s reachable rather than what was booked, and call customers in order of who has waited longest. Timestamped location history strengthens any claim you file.
